Park Accessibility

Madison Park is located in the southeast quadrant of Lakewood on the western edge of the Historic Birdtown Neighborhood. The park is easily accessible to a large population from Northeast Ohio and beyond:

By Foot – Lakewood ranks as Ohio’s most walkable city, with more than 180 miles of sidewalks flanking its streets. Sidewalks abut Madison Park along both Madison and Athens Avenues (between Clarence and Halstead).

By Bike – Madison Avenue, one of Lakewood’s major commercial corridors, features a bike lane extending across the city. Madison Park offers 16 bike racks located throughout its parkland, as well as a bike repair station near the pool.

By Public Transportation – The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) provides a variety of ways to access Madison Park via public transportation. Two rail stations (Triskett and West 117th) are within one mile of Madison Park, and the 25 Madison-Detroit bus line has stops at Cohassett and Clarence that both provide easy access to the park.

By Car – Two parking lots accessible from the north-end (Madison Avenue) and south-end (Athens Avenue) of the park offer visitors 230+ parking spots. Additional on-street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Park History

Madison Park was purchased by the City of Lakewood for the sum of $40,000 during February of 1917. Two years later, city council voted to spend $11,000 to make improvements desirable for park use. Playground equipment was first installed during summer of 1921 and the skatehouse was added in 1925. The baseball/softball diamond was lighted in 1949, and city pool was constructed in 1957. More recent park enhancements include a playground renovation (2008), pathway lighting (2014), futsal courts (2017) and basketball court (2018). Today Madison Park serves as one of the premier public greenspaces within our region, serving a large population consisting of both Lakewood residents and visitors to our city.
